Breed Specific Legislation, Ethics and Research

This morning Belfast City Council had Lennox destroyed under the Dangerous Dogs (Northern Ireland) Order 1991 despite international protest and offers from a sanctury in the USA to take the dog out of the  country. With recent media coverage saying the police predict more riots (http://www.theweek.co.uk/uk-news/society/47743/police-fear-further-city-riots-watchdog-predicts-more-cuts) with them fearing they won’t have the ability to respond to them if they occur at the same time as the Olympic games in two weeks.

Over the past 12 hours there has been national media coverage of the case of Lennox, with it becoming a trending topic on twitter, facebook and other sites. There are claims that Belfast City Council staff have been making animal noises down the phone at people, and have refused to send Lennox’s collar or body back to his owners (http://www.examiner.com/article/belfast-city-council-making-animal-sounds-when-people-call). With Police chiefs saying that the economic situation and mood hasn’t changed in the UK since the riots last year I worry that this could be the spark that ignites it.

Anyways, that is the last thing I plan to say on Lennox RIP as this is about my journey and not the news or politics…

Today I’ve been reworking my ethics paperwork. When you do any research in the UK it has to be signed of by either a superviisor or an ethics committee to ensure that all the rules have been followed. The research I am doing whilst I am not collecting names still requires me to collect some background information to allow me to control representation and my survey population. Whilst I don’t intend to publish it at the moment, I am keeping it in mind as a possiblity so have also had to take this into account.

i think I will get this finished in the next hour or so, and then be able to get my literiterature review finished tommorow. I’ve also got some more of my stuff online to sell to help with my fundraising, my twitter followers and facebook fans are growing and I am starting to reach a larger audience with the readers of my diary starting to double each day!

Sorry for such a brief update, I really must get back to my ethics paperwork
